Portion Control for Weight Loss

Monday, January 27, 2014 - 15:25
A good point was brought up in our private accountability group just now about how we struggle when our routine is messed up, almost like we have too much freedom to be able to make too many choices about WHEN to eat, having more options of WHAT to eat, and HOW long to eat it for.

Does this sounds like you? I think it's completely normal and EXACTLY why most people struggle with eating healthy on the weekends! Too many temptations!

This is exactly WHY portion control is so important!! Portion control is key to weight loss, but is also key to a healthy lifestyle.

Here are a few examples:

A deck of cards = 3 oz chicken
A tennis ball = 1 cup of whole grains or brown rice
A golf ball = 2 tablespoons of nut butter
A mans wallet = A 3 oz salmon filet
Your hands cupped together = 1 cup of raw veggies

I've had to REALLY put this into practice lately being pregnant and all. My tummy doesn't feel well if I stuff it full of food. Miss Ellie doesn't have as much room and it leaves Mom miserable for an hour or so.

Do you think about portions when you are eating?

In the older days, and even when I was growing up we were still told to clean our plates. Well when you are eating at home and your parents control how much goes on the plate or you don't make enough to gorge yourself then YES by all means clean your plate. Where our society has gotten off track IMO is when we go out to eat, which is more and more with busy schedules etc, the restaurants want us to be happy so they give us more for our money to keep us coming back for more! Do you see what I'm getting at here? Not only are there extra calories in the partially hydrogenated butter and vegetable oils that are full of junk, but we also eat up to 3X what we should be eating!! No wonder our country has an obesity epidemic going on!

The next time you go to a restaurant before you start to eat your food, ask for a to go box. Put exactly half of your meal in the box and eat the rest. Let me know if you feel full, or if you would eat the rest because of the clear your plate method we've been taught for so long. (Oh and no need to thank me for saving you some money on turning 1 meal into 2!!)

If you are still struggling with portion control and want some help, let me know. I have a new container system that is easy to follow. I'm accepting 5 people each month to test it out and see what kind of progress they get!
