The Journey to Living Healthy

The Journey to Living Healthy is like most other journey's that happen in life. There aren't short cuts, the road really never ends, and you have to be diciplined, consistent, and self controlled.

Now I'm not saying these things to scare you off or make you think that it's not something that you can ever do, because with the right help and support, living a healthy lifestyle can be achieved. The journey and the road to healthy living will be life changing. You'll feel better about yourself, have confidence in yourself, have more energy to play with your kids or grandkids or to travel to unkown places. The list goes on. Your health is what allows you to do things in life that you've never done, to meet the people you need to meet, to live the life that you want to live. This isn't rocket science, we know that if we are sick we miss out on things that we want to do. But, then ask yourself, why do we take so long to come around to living a healthy lifestyle?

I've come up with a few things that might hold some of us back at times.

-Time

-Energy

-Money

-Thinking you'll never get to eat your favorite UNhealthy foods again

-Taste

-Self love/Confidence (The I'd rather be fat and happy approach)

 

Now if any of these reasons are why you haven't decided to start your journey to living healthy, I've got good news for you. I can help with ALL of the above reasons. The one thing YOU need to do and the ONLY thing I can't help you with is for you to decide that you are ready and you're going to give it your all no matter what it takes.

Focusing on what goes into your body, journaling or using myfitnesspal.com to track your calories, nutrients, and what kinds of foods you consume is the first step.

Write it ALL down, the good, the bad, and the ugly. The more you have on record, the more you will be able to know what your strengths and weaknesses are when it comes to food. We all have them. We all have our vices, emotional eating, stressed out, free food even though it makes you feel like junk afterwards, not eating breakfast so by mid day you are so hungry you could eat a horse and you binge eat, night time eating, etc. The more we know about ourselves the more we can do things to help prevent our vices from occuring.

Now let's be clear on one thing, eating healthy doesn't mean that you never get to eat oreos, cookies, cake ever again, or that the food you will be eating won't taste good. It's just as a society we have too many special occasions. I could have a special occasion two to three times a week if I wanted a reason to, and all of those reasons could involve me eating something that I shouldn't eat often, and that's what causes weight gain. Which is one of my biggest reasons for living healthy.

Another reason why I try to eat healthy as much as possible is becasue I get severe migraines, like many others in the world. What I've found is that most of us, myself including, just want the pain to go away and go to a pill to make it happen. In my recent studies at Institute of Integrative Nutrition, I've found that what we eat causes a lot of the distresses we have in our lives. As I've experimented with foods over the last 6 months, I've found that certain amounts of foods cause me to get migraines or have stomach aches, or to have less energy, or gain weight. Knowing what foods cause what symptoms make it easier to make better choices for myself. One example I've found for myself is that when I'm getting a migraine, green tea helps relieve the symptoms for me.

Now, if you are ready to start your own journey to living healthy, I just want you to know up front. It's a journey, a road, and on that road you have set backs, hills and valleys, wrong turns, and bad choices, but the effort to start and to learn about what the good choices are, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and what foods cause what symptoms for you, is all research that you will be able to use to help yourself on the journey.
